Pre-Registration is Open guys!

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 11:20 AM
Don't know if you guys have noticed, but Pre-Registration is open! Go!

I already have.

In general, do you find yourself more attracted to people with similar or different interests, life experiences, political beliefs, and religious backgrounds? Do you think having some common interests/goals is essential for a successful relationship?

I prefer a solid foundation of similar interests and beliefs and yes I think it's absolutely essential. Similar experiences and backgrounds not necessarily, though.

I find it easier to love someone I have interests in common with because it provides ground for interesting and enjoyable conversations that both of us will be genuinely engaged in. All of our interests obviously don't have to be the same, but there must be at least a couple big things we share. The only relationship I've ever been in where this was not the case failed because of it - she didn't understand the attention I devoted to my obsessions and got mad at me for it, which in turn drove me further away from her. I like obsessing over or at the very least mutually appreciating movies, shows, books, artwork, science, et cetera with my significant other. I also love the process of showing each other the fixations we don't happen to already share - nothing's more exciting than cuddling up and playing your special someone one of your favorite series for the first time and then getting to watch something they enjoy in return and experience their excitement when you start to get into it. It's both a fabulous bonding experience and a means of reliving that obsession as it was for you the first time around. Same thing goes for beliefs - not all of mine and theirs must align perfectly, but at least a couple of them should. It's fun to dig into the details of an issue and debate it out with someone, but not constantly and not so much with your significant other. If you're serious about the relationship they're probably going to wind up being the person you come home to every day and the person you confide in most regarding proceedings of said day. At that point in time I usually want someone who will at least somewhat sympathize with what I have to say, or will simply listen and contribute intelligent commentary -- not someone who would be liable to want to argue about it on the spot. That would become stressful and unpleasant really quickly and would make home not feel like a safe place to relax.

What's not essential are having similar experiences, backgrounds or personalities. Yes if you share the same interests and beliefs you've going to share some personality qualities, but I actually find it's a better dynamic if a lot of this is different: someone high strung should be with an easy going partner, someone shy should be paired with someone fairly outgoing, et cetera. This helps ground you and balance you out as a person. And with that foundation of similar interests and beliefs, I find I'm more likely to trust them and to step outside my comfort zone or vice versa situationally. And of course, these are all base-state qualities I'm talking here, because when you're with someone long enough you tend to configure yourself to correspond to them and you each become a bit more like the other and start to fill each other's specific needs. I know that I certainly came out of my last relationship with a good deal of my significant other's qualities and he also definitely came out with several of mine. Serious healthy relationships are super dynamic, life changing experiences.

It just hit me that the lobby of any theatre showing that movie would be a great place to do some fursuiting! Thoughts on this?

MFF Approaches. I'll be there!

Do you know how healthy your immune system is?

H1N1 is pretty rampant right now, and while most will experience it as nothing more than "another flu", it allegedly does have a higher mortality rate and more severe symptoms. That doesn't mean you should panic, but it does mean it's good to be safe and take precautions, no?

MFF is in 2 weeks. You should start building your immune system now - drink lots of orange juice. Take your vitamins. Eat good leafy-green vegetables.

...Because you know that there will be folks going to the con even if they are deathly sick. And you know it will spread, because everyone wants to cuddle everyone, and many furs aren't very sanitary in the first place. My prediction: worst furry con crud numbers ever. I hope I'm wrong. 2000+ people attending, crammed into a smallish convention space. Stay healthy folks. Not trying to spread more silly propaganda that H1N1 is this uber-terrible thing, but still...I'd like to stay not-sick myself! ;P

But yeah, happy times! I'll be at MFF after all, as things worked out that I'll be able to go (pop's surgery was pushed back a couple of weeks). Who will I see there?!

HAHAHAHA Perro's old.

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 8:03 AM
.. wait.. I'm already that old too.

Happy Birthday you old bastard!
As we count down with excitement to Midwest FurFest 2009, a celebration of the tenth anniversary of Midwest FurFest, we wanted to talk about some of the things that might be helpful for you, whether you're an old hand at MFF or if this is your very first convention. We'll call this TEN THINGS THAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT MIDWEST FURFEST!

Number Seven: Midwest FurFest has shuttles available!

The Westin Chicago North Shore has a hotel shuttle that operates in a three-mile radius around the hotel. This radius includes TWO Metra (commuter rail) stations: the Lake-Cook Road Station on the MD-North line and the Wheeling Station on the North Central Service line (which does not run on weekends!). The Westin will be happy to pick you up from the Metra station IF: 1. You are a paying guest at the Westin, and 2. If you call the Westin at (847) 777-6500 twenty-four hours in advance to let them know you will need a ride.

The reason they request the latter is because of manpower issues: you don't want to have a driver scheduled for a time when they're going to just be sitting around for hours with nothing to do, y'know? Additionally, if you are coming in late at night, the Westin may or may not be able to give you a ride from the train stations - always call the hotel and confirm in advance if at all possible. And just in case, it's always a good idea to have the number of a local cab company (found on our Travel Page) just in case.

Our overflow hotels, the Hampton Inn Lincolnshire and the Courtyard By Marriott Lincolnshire will be running shuttles to and from the Westin at least every half-hour, operating on the following schedule:
Thursday, November 19th . 5pm until Midnight
Friday, November 20th . 8am until 2am
Saturday, November 21st . 8am until 2am
Sunday, November 22nd . 8am until 2am

If you have any issues or concerns with the Hampton Inn or Courtyard shuttles, please stop by our Information Desk or call the Westin and as to speak to Midwest FurFest Operations.

That's all for this installment of TEN THINGS THAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT MIDWEST FURFEST! Tune in on Monday to see what Number Six will be.

...Is it possible to dream too big?

I have some pretty lofty dreams. I'd love to see them achieved, but I simultaneously try to pursue them while still holding a healthy amount of doubt.

Is this wrong? And if this seems silly...humor me. I'm pretty exhausted right now. :p

Apologies up front for the "shameless self-promotion" aspect of this post, but it's FurFright-related as well... so there. :P

For anyone who's interested, the Drama Armada page on FA has been updated to include both "Yiff You", our (award-losing!) Coldplay parody from this year's Masquerade, and "All Furries Go To Hell", our (award-winning!) original song/sketch from last year. That's two songs for the price of one... which, incidentally, is free. :D

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday to a red pup!

Congratulations PERRO!

May your days be filled with all kinds of fun stuff ;)
Wednesday I went to Brooklyn, NY to be in a music video for the band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.  The video, for Higher Than the Stars, is the first known production to use furries as actors instead of actors as (media misrepresentations of) furries.  Others appearing in the video, off the top of my head, are [info]foxwell , [info]yargo , [info]quentincoyote ,  and [info]xerxesqados.  (I don't remember the exact names of the others.)  Barely organized photos and video of the shoot are here.

Here is Greyface. He is on ebay.
Started out as a commission for someone who cancelled, and I was going to make a last-minute Halloween costume out of it but I ran out of time and then it poured down raining all night anyway. ::shrug.:: So here is this.

Everyone on the planet is selling suits right now BUT OH WELL that just means you get your pick of like ten thousand awesome things in time for MFF.

Oh, and Yarwick is finished, too.

Thanksgiving furry meet, in Hoboken NJ!

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 6:53 PM
As I've mentioned previously, we will be having a Thanksgiving potluck meet at our new place. The meet will be on Friday Nov. 27th, starting around noon, until whenever, and we will have crash space for the weekend.

At this point though, I really need a more firm headcount of how many will be coming, so that we have an idea how big a turkey we need to get. (Once again, we'll be providing a turkey with the usual trimmings, but we ask that in the potluck style, everyone please bring at least one thing to share.)

Please note that, while we've got a decent amount of room at the new place, we don't have an infinite amount of space, so if the guest list gets too large, I'll have to start cutting it off. That being the case, the sooner you let me know that you're coming the better, please. :)

At the moment so far, we have:

Quentin
Rex
Fal
Wolfgang
Torsten
Wraith
Batty
Watcher
Wulven
Shy (tentative)
Kuper (tentative)
Xerxes (tentative)
Foxwell (tentative)

I think a few other people from long island told me they'd be coming as well, but I wanna reconfirm that. So, in any case, please comment here if you will be coming, along with what you will be making or bringing. :) (all comments are screened)

Directions will be sent out to confirmed attendees.

See you there! :)

A wrench thrown into the gear work.

Agh, Everything was going smoothly when I woke up this morning at 3 AM. Got the little things packed and left at 3:50 AM. The drive was going fine for 40 miles. When I passed Lake St. In Lake Elsinore on I-15. I felt a big bump. Looked on my side view and saw large sparks coming from the trailer. The wheel came off. Holy shit! All is ok. I went safely to the shoulder and used a call box for a tow truck. Got the trailer towed to my house and paid a fee of $290. Ugh. What happened was that the lug nuts gotten loosen somehow (I think it was my evil neighbor for sabotage. Having a lot of problems with him). I started to work on the wheel/brake drum. Wen to the trailer parts place to get the stuff. Now it is ready to go! Will be leaving at 3:35. Going to do the trip all night till I reach my destination at 11 AM. Hope to see some of you at Howloween. :)

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.
